I Can’t Believe This Happened!!! // 2018 [CC]

Hello, lovely people, and welcome to 2018! Yes! I don’t know why I clap like a seal. I just do. So the first video that I made last year in 2017 was a ‘hopes and wishes’ video. All the things that I hoped would come true. So, that is what we are going to be watching and…reacting to? It’s not really reacting, but watching and seeing whether those things came true. I think we all know…one of them did. And if you were following me at this time last year, you’ll know that I told you to go and put into the comments your own hopes and wishes, and things you wanted to come true in 2017 down into the comments of that video So, if you did that, please – you can play along with this – go back, have a look at the comments, tell me if they came true, and then tell me down below in the comments of this video. Did that make sense? [2017 J] Are you gonna annoy your brother less? [2018 J] Tilly is so tiny! She’s so tiny, it’s so cute. Oh, my God. She’s so fluffy, though. [2017 J] Things To Work Towards In 2017 (except that’s a really long title) “Things to work towards in 2017 that I hope will come true” I think I got better at shortening titles. [2017 J] Hello to everyone who subscribed over the holidays. Actually, it’s more like holidays, isn’t it? Because it’s Christmas. I’m just being global. [2018 J] I did that in my BSL and ASL Christmas video with Rikki. I was like, “holidays.” But it’s not, because it’s… [2017 J] In this video, we’re going to say five things that we hope or that we want to change this year. And then in a whole year’s time, we’re gonna come back and watch this video again, and see what’s happened and what hasn’t happened on this very day, which is the sixth of January, which is actually the end of Christmas. [2018 J] It’s not the sixth of January. But it’s the eighth, and that’s pretty close. OK? Pretty close. [2017 J] Hi, future me. [2018 J] Hi, past me! [2017 J] Number one: I want to write a book. [2017 J] I’ve maybe had about ten different book ideas just kind of swilling around in my head. [2018 J] OK, so, when it comes to writing a book, I actually said this in the… OK, I made a 200K video. I was really excited to release it. But then my hard drive died, and it was on my hard drive, (and I know: technology hates me. It hates me!) so I’ve taken it to get fixed and I’m really sad, because I liked that video a lot but hopefully it can be saved. So hopefully that will be out soon. But, in that, I say: I spend a lot of my time writing books. Just constantly – I’m constantly writing always and in the Notes section of my phone I always have about three or four different books being written at the same time. Notes section. iCloud is really good, because you can get them from all of your devices, so even if your laptop dies or your hard drive it’s still safe! It’s still safe. Yeah. I might cry a little bit about the hard drive thing, actually, because it has the back-up of my laptop on. Never mind. Never mind. So – well, have I written a book? Have I written a book? I’ve written 75% of three books this year. So, almost. Kind of. Kind of almost, yeah. OK, I’m going to give myself three quarters of a star for this one. [2017 J] Number two, I’m going to up my energy levels by increasing the amount of foods that I eat. [2018 J] Number two: I can give myself an absolutely massive star for this one! Because, when it comes to increasing the number of foods that I have eaten, wow, has there been such a huge difference since last year. I know a couple of people have asked me, actually, to make an update video about the food that I eat. And would you still like to see that? Because I definitely can see such a massive difference, especially in my energy levels from now – even though, right now I have sinusitis, which clearly is when your sinuses in your face get infected and I’ve got like a chest infection thing going on as well – but, look at me! Up, wearing clothes and make-up! Talking to you! And I think a lot of that has got to do with the way my diet has improved and the supplements that I now take. So, let me know if you would like a food updated video, and maybe a sort of supplements as well and I could do that for Friday, in fact. Because I’m going to be releasing videos on Monday and Friday. Like last year. Before Vlogmas, when… I got steamrollered. [2017 J] Actually discovered one new food, at least, that I’m totally obsessed with and really is helping my energy levels. [2018 J] Sweet potato. Oh, my God, my obsession with sweet potato began. It began last year, we have video evidence of the sweet potato obsession. Ohh, dear. [2017 J] Number three: Make some amazing travel logs! Travel…vlogs. Travel…vlogs. [2018 J] I did this! I did this. We made some–we made travel vlogs. We went to – where did we go? Went to Budapest, Valencia… France, the Lake District… I think definitely we improved a lot of our filming techniques and we got some really nice, new equipment during Vlogmas, so, I think – if you noticed…? If you noticed, there was a little uptake. What did you think of the travel vlogs that we made last year? Did you like them? [Excitedly] There are definitely going to be some more coming. [2017 J] Number four – this is Claudia’s idea (really clearly not mine): I am going to find some kind of exercise that I am not terrible at. [2017 J] Yes. [2018 J] [Clears throat guiltily] Um… No. Is it an exercise? Yeah, I use my arms. I use my arms – therefore, wheelchairing is an exercise, largely just because it’s something I know I can do. But, other than that, no. We had the whole intention – our plan was that every month we were going to try a new exercise. We were going to film ourselves doing it; we were going to make a little video series about exercise and… how it can…be good. Claud, also, her plan was to do yoga every day. That didn’t happen. But she’s done yoga for every OTHER day in 2018 so far and that’s–that’s going well. Zero stars for this one. Zero stars. [2017 J] Number five (yeah!): This is probably the hardest one because it’s the one that I can’t control at all. I have absolutely loved growing our lovely family and [?] here and I love having little chats with you guys. And one thing about, you know, being anyone with some kind of disability or illness is that you spend a lot of time on your own. Mm. Sad. It really means a lot to me to be able to chat to you guys; have you right there, just the other side of the camera, and looking at the comments and posting and la, la, la, la, la. Also, on Instagram – you guys are amazing! I love you, people who follow me on Instagram. You’re so sweet. Thank you. [2018 J] OK, one thing: It’s still true. Everyone who follows me on Instagram, you are all so adorable and encouraging and…I’ve been taking a break from Instagram for the past week, as I have taken a break from making videos, and…and I’ve really missed it! I’ve REALLY missed it. Because I use Instagram more, I guess as you would say, almost a daily diary where I post the, you know, real how I am feeling. “Today I cannot get out of bed.” “I feel terrible.” “So I have decided to wear a sequinned gown.” I’m so cheered by all the comments that people leave which are just [like], “Go, Jessica!” “Yes, guys! Thank you!” “Thank you!” You cheer my soul up. [2017 J] So, I want to grow our lovely family and…numbers feels like such a weird thing, doesn’t it? “Let’s talk numbers” Because obviously I’m so grateful for everyone who’s already subscribed to me, but… yeah, let’s get our little band bigger, shall we? Let’s bring people into the fold for…bonding OK, so currently we have…2,200? I think. [2018 J] So… 2,200 and this was…what was it? January 6th, 2017 and today is January 8th, 2018 and we have two hundred thousand… and two hundred. So, that happened! That happened. Yeah. What was my prediction? [2017 J] I think 2,200. [2017 J] So, we’ll just…ten. We’ll–we’ll multiply that by ten. OK, twenty-two thousand. [Gasps] That’s a big number. [2018 J] It might just be an emotional day where I cry at everything, because also the hard drive thing made me cry, but… there are just a– I wish there were so many ways that I could say thank you to you, but I think the best way to say thank you is to continue to make the content that you guys enjoy the most. So, obviously that is what I will be doing for the rest of this year. There will be at least two videos a week. At least. I don’t know, in Malaysia, there might be– ’cause our plan is that we’re going to do a weekly vlog, and then smaller, shorter videos through the week – maybe one or maybe two – just with–if we do something amazing that deserves its own video. Hello, Matilda. Have you come to join? Up. Well, hey! Hello, Tills. Wanna say hello? Look how big you are now. Look how big. I was just looking at tiny you. I was. [Affectionate and kissing noises] So it’s 2018. Yes. Finally. A date I can get behind. Yeah, I have issues with the number seven. Um, and seventeen. I don’t like it. It doesn’t work. But I think 2018, because of the eight, it looks more like a balanced… number. Here are my five goals for 2018. Number one! We’re going to start with something frivolous. Grow my hair. I really just want to grow my hair So I’m not gonna cut my hair for all of 2018. My plan is: when we have babies, I will have really long hair and in order for that to happen I need to stop cutting it. Number two: Continue to write more. Just…more. Maybe actually finish one of those books. It will happen this year. You’re going to Malaysia, you’ve got some time. While you’re lying there, tanning… That’s a joke. I wear factor 80 and I lie in the shade. Generally in a long robe. Anyway. While you’re lying there warming …try some writing. Write a bit more. Number three: (This sort of goes along with the exercise thing but… not really) Increase general muscle tone. Not just purely for aesthetic reasons. You know what? I like my body, actually, so… Hey, I’m true body positivity [?] The body you got, the body you love. That’s true. Yeah, yeah. Oh, although, I could go on some rants about body positivity. Don’t even get me started. I mean, then there’s like a whole cross-section ableism, intersectional – oh! Anyway! I really do need to increase my general muscle tone, though, because I have a connective tissue disorder and I dislocate and I would do that less if my bigger muscles were better and could hold me together. So. Number four: Get even better at making videos. Yes! That sounded very conceited – “get even better” – but still! I think you should be proud of what your achievements are and I am proud of what my achievements have been. I want to get my editing much, much faster than it currently is. It does take me a lot of time to edit and obviously I need help with the audio and everything! But I’d like to get much faster and much snappier, and be able to add more things into the videos. Like I’d like to be able to do a lot more cut-away scenes. Currently, that, I find, uses a lot of energy for me but I think if I get better at it, it will eventually take less energy. And number five: I’m going to go with another subscriber prediction. This year, though, we’re not gonna get quite so… we’re not gonna get quite so over-excited. I’m going to say… I mean, to be honest, at this point, I’m going to be shocked if 300(K) happens. Um, but… OK, let’s set–gonna set a goal. It’s gonna be…it’s gonna be big. [Quietly] Let’s say 400,000? Is that too–no. That’s too big. That’s too big. I’m doing it again, see?! I have a thing and then I pull it back. Three–OK, we’re gonna settle. Three-fifty! Three hundred and fifty thousand by this time next year. So, there you go – that is what happened to the predictions that I made last year. Way back when. And those are my predictions for 2018! What are your predictions? What are your hopes and goals and wishes? What do you really want to come true? Tell me down below in the comments and then we will come back next year! And see what has happened and whether they have come true. And again, please, please, please, if you put in the comments last year the things that you hoped would come true, let me know if they have, and you can get a gold star. A gold star for each of the things that came true. Bing! Thank you, you wonderful, wonderful people for joining me in starting the new year and I’m looking forward to all of the adventures that we’re going to have in 2018.

  • Lisa Hartig says:

Oh my god, I have the exact same feelings toward the number 7! I don't even know why but I've always hated it the number just feels.. wrong? Like it's a mean number. If 7 would be a person I imagine them being conceited and nasty I don't know. But I'm fine with 8! It's actually my favourite numer because it's symmetrical and all ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Ella says:

    Happy new year to you!

My goal for this year is to be the best version of me that I can be.

    I love your videos, you're fantastic! ๐Ÿ’–

Hi Jessica! Congratulations on 200, 000 subscribers! I would love to see more videos on the food you can eat and I love your travel vlogs. Is there anyway that you might considered making more vlogs about your scoliosis? I have a "s" shaped curve with pretty severe angles and that has kept me from doing many things throughout my life. I accept that it is a part of who I am and I live with it, but somedays it's just nice to see that I'm not the only person that is in this situation. I hope all of your 2018 goals come true! You are such a lovely person and watching your videos always makes me feel so happy and so much better about myself and being bisexual and disabled, as well as about having mental health issues (more self-care videos, maybe?). Send my love to Claudia and Clara! I hope this year treats you all well!

  • Elizabeth Bulfer says:

    My 2018 goals:
1 – be pregnant / have baby (shhhhh, secret LOL!) We've been trying and having trouble, but hopefully this year will be better!
2 – get in better shape so muy good days can at least be equal in number to my bad days
3 – hit Premier in doTERRA! (Love them)
4 – start a YouTube channel by my bday (March 19) and have 100 subscribers by year's end
5 – finish the "in progress" house projects

Best of luck with your goals!

Jessica I wanted to say thank you for inspiring me fashion-wise. I love to wear Dirndls (German and Austrian traditional dresses) and I've never had the guts to wear them out before in case people look at me but watching your videos about vintage styles and seeing how you wear them all the time and go out and just go about your life in them has boosted my courage. Today I went out for the first time in my Dirndl and I felt so free and happy wearing it so I just wanted to message you and say thanks.

If you want to grow out your hair, you should actually cut it every now and then! Every three months or so, get the tiniest bit cut off, so that your hair stays healthy and you get rid of split ends. My father's a hairdresser and he taught me this trick and it really helps ๐Ÿ™‚

two questions, neither of which are related to the video!
    1) how do you know if a mobility aid is right for you? i'm not even 18 yet, so i'm wary about what family would think (truthfully, i'd probably only use it while i'm away at school), but i'm not even sure at what point somebody needs one!! though i know it varies from person to person
    2) do you know where i can find vintage prom dresses? not actually vintage, that's expensive as heeeeck, but! modern dresses that are styled to be vintage. where i can find them/any particular styles that you think are good for prom/formals

  • Kit Thomas says:

I dunno if "trim" and "cut" is the same thing to everyone, but just to maybe aid your quest for long hair: trimming it a little bit every couple months can help. As someone who has had long hair for a couple decades, it helps your hair look healthier, fuller, and grow a little better if you just give it a little trim to neaten it up. Some people I've run into just stop touching it up all together, and feel betrayed when their hair gets thin at the ends. I assume you know your stuff, though. Good luck growing it out! It takes a bit of time, but it'll look gorgeous I'm sure!

  • Shandra Parker says:

Here are my top 5. 1) Finish my Master's Degree and become a reading specialist. 2) innish my ASL training so I can work with the hearing impaired. 3) build my 1950 vintage wardrobe 4) Take more pride in my everyday appearance (no longer looking homeless while teaching tiny humans) 5) get fit and healthy. This one is more to do with health than weight. I could stand to lose 75+ lbs. But is more to be able to control my blood sugars (dangerously low, like BAD in the 40's).

  • Ry B says:

I just wanted to say that you are so inspiring! My gf and I are both disabled (she has MS and I have fibro, POTS, and CFS) and we have just discovered your channel. I'm new to the family, only been here a week so I didn't have a list to play along with. But I'll make a list of five for this year and play along next year.

  • Creek says:

my goals for 2018 are to write more, get more fit in my shoulders/neck/back bc my chiropractor said it will ease my pain a lot, keep better care of my skin, have a wardrobe that makes me feel good every day and make more friends!

  • Ina Maxine says:

Congratulation with the 200K! I love seeing someone with disabilaty be so happy and do all these things ๐Ÿ˜Š Hope you reach the goals for 2018!
My biggest goal for 2018 is to get a freaking diagnose! I'm suffering from pain in muscles, joints and so on….. so basically all over, and we don't know why๐Ÿ˜•

  • Wendy Hemken says:

Why have you switched from signing in your videos to not signing in your videos?

  • Laidi Kirsta says:

    Hi Jessica!
I just found your videos a few days ago quite by chance, but I've been watching a ton of them since. I'm not an active YouTube user, so your channel is actually the first one I've ever subscribed to! Aaand this is the first comment I've ever written, so well done in getting me activated. ๐Ÿ™‚

First, two tips regarding your goals. If you want to grow your hair, you really should cut it a tiny bit about every four months or so. It keeps the hair healthier and less tangly (is that a word?) and it will actually help it grow better. Fewer hairs will be pulled loose by the hairbrush if the ends are nice and not worn out.
Regarding exercise, have you tried water aerobics in warmer water? At least here in Sweden (yes, your roots are calling), there are a lot of places that offer water aerobics and a lot of rehab places have it with water that's around +35C. I have fibromyalgia and have been offered this from several places, you should check if the NHS has something like it. It's really good because it's nice and warm, you don't get sweaty, and there are no hard, bumpy movements or jumps with heavy landings. You do it in groups with a leader standing on the pool edge, but most of you are going to be underwater, so no one will really see much of how good/bad you are. ๐Ÿ˜›

As you see from my writing, I have a problem keeping things short, so I have a few more than five goals for 2018:
    1. Finish writing the book I'm working on (long-term goal is to have a publisher deal in 2020, when I turn 35. Nice and even.)
    2. Start a bilingual feminist book/language blog with a disability twist (this will hopefully happen this month!)
3.Get my first job translating a fiction book (I'm a translator and I'm fed up with translating hoover manuals and subtitling weird TV shows.)
    4. Get 50% disability benefits so that I can work properly halftime (your videos made me question why no one have ever suggested this to me, instead of just watching me crash and end up on sick leave every two years or so.)
    5. Get my illnesses/syndromes/problems better sorted out, mapped and understood (also something I've started questioning thanks to you.)
    6. Get more fit and healthy by continuing to do nording walking and yoga every weekday, and get down to around 60kg for health reasons (currently on 67kg, was up on 85kg a few years ago due to a medicine, and I'm only 162cm tall. I'm a walking chemical experiment.)
    7. Move abroad for a couple of years, probably to London (my programmer fiancรฉ has some really cool job opportunities coming up, and I work from home, so we want to do an adventure abroad!)
    8. Become fluent in Dutch (my fiancรฉ is from the Netherlands, and I wanted to learn Dutch even before I met him. Weird coincidence.)

Writing this list was actually quite good, it made my goals even clearer for myself. Thank you for getting me to do it! I've been working on a major life clean/makeover since about November, there are a lot of things I want to change/improve and I'm well on my way. And watching your videos is going to be a help in that, you encourage me to continue and I'm glad I've found you.
