What is breast augmentation? In layman’s terms, it
means breast enlargement and to achieve that goal
we have two options, the saline breast implant which is a
breast implant filled with salt water or a silicone breast implant which is
an implant filled with silicone gel, what the patient chooses largely depends
on patients [unclear 00:01:21]. Modern trends suggest that more and
more patients choose silicone implants over saline because the silicone implant
feels more like a natural tissue, it is very difficult to tell
by touch that something is in and of course that makes a huge
difference to majority of patients. The patients nowadays
do not have to go on the general anesthesia
for breast augmentation. In my practice, I use
intravenous sedation which is always administered by a
board-certified anesthesiologist. Patients who undergo
these procedures generally have a much nicer
postoperative recovery, the incidence of large and vomiting
is reduced almost to zero, patients wake up a lot faster and they
are ready to go home a lot faster. The second phase of your
recovery is when you are at home and the body needs to get
used to the new implants. For the majority of patients
that means approximately a week, five to seven days
until they are ready to resume most of their everyday activities
until they are able to return to work. Even though breast augmentation seems
to be a straightforward procedure, there are a lot of nuances to it while
the implants all look the same, the patients don’t
all look the same and it is important to
evaluate the patient properly to see how much breast tissue they have,
how their skin can adjust to implants and their muscles can
adjust to the implant. Having done several thousand of these
gives one a sense of confidence that you can predict how the patient will
do and what the patient will look like with a particular type of implant
long-term. I think that is invaluable.
