What’s Up in Makeup NEWS! Issa Rae x Cover Girl + Hurricane Inspired Makeup Look? + Makeup Machines!

There’s a brand new CoverGirl,
retail is taking on some new forms, and hurricane inspired makeup? I’m Jen from Jen Luvs Reviews and What’s Up
in Makeup Starts Now Welcome to What’s Up in Makeup for September
17, 2017. Let’s get started with the Top Industry News
Covergirl has been a household name in the cosmetics industry for decades, often choosing
an amazing person as the “face” of the brand. People like Queen Latifah, Rihanna, Ellen
Degeneres, and the ageless Christie Brinkley have enhanced the value of the brand. Now, the company has named its latest CoverGirl… Issa Rae, well known for her web series “Awkward
Black Girl” and her role in the HBO series “Insecure”. The official announcement was made through
Issa’s IG page where she stated, “I remember…casually flipping through COVERGIRL ads, singing their
slogan in my head. Never EVER in my life did I imagine I’d be
one.” Issa stands out as the only face of CoverGirl
that has written and starred in her own T.V. show. She said in an official statement, “My character
is ever-evolving, and makeup is a tool to help transform my persona — whether for
a role I play in content that I produce, or the different roles I take on in my life.” She went on to add, “Becoming a CoverGirl
means a lot because the brand recognizes just how important it is for people to embrace
their individuality and express themselves in unique and diverse ways. This has been a major part of my personal
journey, and a message that I want to share with others.” Congrats Issa on this latest achievement! And if you see CoverGirl displays in store,
you may also see one of the Collective Influencer Network with products to recreate their looks. Look for the Instagram logo on those displays. Creating makeup looks that no one else has
done is getting harder and harder to do. It seems people have thought of everything,
but turns out there’s always a new spin on makeup to be had. On September 9th, instagrammer Kali Harlow
stepped out of the box and into the storm with this hurricane inspired eye look. As part of the text accompanying the post,
Kali wrote “my heart breaks for the Caribbeans, the Bahamas, and now Florida and eventually
Georgia. Everyone please be safe and be careful.” However, not everyone saw the look the way
Kali did and comments soon erupted into their own storm. One commenter wrote: “Very cool… Timing? So wrong. People are dying and [you are] taking advantage
of the situation to get likes. Not cool.” Kali eventually apologized to “everyone
who I have offended with my latest makeup post.” So, what do you think? Was this just art or was it disrespectful
to the people who endured, and are still enduring. the effects of this tragic event? We’d love to know your thoughts in the comments
below. Fashion Week seems to be an exciting time
to gain inspiration for your next makeup look. And once you get that inspiration, the search
for the perfect product to recreate the look begins. This year the search has become more affordable. Elf Cosmetics debuted 5 limited edition bundles
with designer Christian Siriano! Each bundle contains 5-6 products to help
you get the fashion week look, and each is a thrifty $26 or less. Here are the highlights with their inspo shots:
Elf x Christian Siriano Fuschia Lip Look – $17 Navy Eye Look – $19
Gold Eye Look – $24 Fuschia Eye Look – $24
and the Green Eye Look – $26 Tom Ford has done it again for all lipstick
lovers. The Boys and Girls Collection, which just
launched in time for the holidays consists of 100 different shades, each named after
one of Tom Ford’s closest friends. Each lipstick is clutch-sized, luxury packaging
with the “boys” being housed in dark mahagony tubes and the “girls” in white. The Collection has a wide range of finishes
including cream, mattes, ultra rich, metallic, and sheers, and shades range from the High
Shine pale silvery blue of Lily to the Metallic Dark Aubergine named Travis. With so many available, how do you choose? Most of us would see if there is one with
your name. If not, consider this…boys are the more
pigmented shades, and girls are the shimmers and sheers. Still stymied? Keep in mind that the girls are limited edition
and the boys are permanent at Sephora and tomford.com. You may have seen vending machines by Benefit
and Sephora in some major airports across the US. Well, now there’s another vending machine
on the way. CVS Pharmacy’s automated retail vending machines
will soon be on the scene, stocked with popular personal care products, as well as over-the-counter
health products and snacks. The first 25 machines will be installed now
through the end of October in New York and New England, in transportation hubs, office
parks and college campuses. An additional 50+ locations throughout the
country may be planned next. Now through October 8, there is a curated
retail boutique in Story on 10th and 19th in Manhattan’s west side. It features the Coty brands CoverGirl, Clairol,
Rimmel and Sally Hansen in a setting that says, “come on in and fill your Instagram
feed.” The concept blends mass, masstige, prestige
and luxury, so you will find drugstore products mixed in with luxury skincare…just like
your own bathroom! And products are displayed in highly Instagrammable
vignettes, including a mosaic at the A1 Array Portrat Studio for your selfies. There will also be virtual try-on mirrors
and a DIY maincure station. in EVENTS this week

of everything makeup and love. That is also going to be linked down below. Just a heads up there is no What’s Up in Makeup

crazy that I just decided to stop doing it altogether. So we will see you in 2 weeks for another
episode of What’s Up in Makeup. But before that, we are going to have our
weekly community chat this week. Last week we had almost 500 people there at

and it will be happening again today at 10am eastern time. If for some reason you miss it, you can catch
it on the replay. Just look for the video titled LIVE CHAT on

time For this mommas Sunday morning news!😄 and hurricane makeup?!😖 not the best idea/ timing, i totally get that an artist might try to work through an issue like this , but if you're going to present your work to the public then you should really watch your timing. It looked cool though

    Elf is uppin' their game….

  • Debbie Kershner says:

People are constantly looking for a reason to be offended. A girl does her eye makeup to look like the colors on a weather map and wishes well to everyone affected by the storm. How does this harm anyone?

I purchased a couple boys lipsticks from Tom Ford and was very disappointed in the size. It was just a little bigger than a deluxe sample that I got from Este Lauder. I felt it was way overpriced.

People are so sensitive nowadays, its just makeup and she clearly stated in the post that she sympathizes with those affected by the hurricane, smh. I live in Jamaica, we have hurricanes all the time so I can relate but i also appreciate art and thats all that look is to me…very creative!

  • Yvette Pagan says:

    Your glowing! Looking beautiful.

  • Melissa Villanueva says:

Art imitating life – I don't think the hurricane look is offensive; just an interesting, editorial eye look. This & last week's The Balm palette being racist just proves people are always trolling – social media is just the perfect medium to do so – just my itty, bitty opinion.

The eyeshadow look is just stupid

  • Susan Deneen says:

People need to find more important things to worry about than a makeup artists eye look. Maybe instead of trolling IG, they could be out doing something constructive in their communities.

  • Jesse the Smartass says:

I don't care for the photo, but I still think it was done in poor taste.

  • Snuglebuny1978 DeGroot says:

Congratulations to the new cover girl I love love her show it's soo funny, I'm sure she didn't mean any harm but in my opinion it was bad timing and insensitive

  • Madd for Beauty says:

I'm definitely not a person who's easily offended, but I feel like trying to turn a hurricane into a make up look is kinda insensitive. Hurricanes are not beautiful, they are so destructive. I have personally been affected by Irma (I live in Florida) and there are people in Florida still struggling. I understand what she was trying to do, I definitely don't think it was malicious intent, but there are much better ways to support people affected by Irma than to do a make up look.

  • epuresoul says:

    I'm happy for Issa.

  • Pam's Pretty Plants says:

Hurricane eyelook was category 4 tone deaf Becky shit.

  • Nusrat Khan says:

Wow Jen, ur vids are SO comprehensive! From what I heard so far, looks like Smashbox has some of the best holiday deals. I sure got a LOT of Ulta 21 Days of Beauty deals- LOL! I got into makeup late (after 30). BTW, I have same earrings as you here.

  • Jenny Fry says:

It's art. If a painter used a canvas nobody would think twice. People get inspiration from Mother Nature everyday.

  • Carmen Betty says:

I personally think the hurricane look was in bad taste because the timing was wrong. She did it at a time where people were very vulnerable loosing their homes, lives, belongings..etc… and she found art in that! No not acceptable in humble opinion.

  • PrettyMeanGumbo says:

    Great news,Jen!

  • SandraJo.23 says:

$1500 for 8 pieces of VB makeup?! Wow that stuff better be the fountain of youth and make me 20 years old again. $50 for a tube of lipstick – yikes!

  • SandraJo.23 says:

As always, great report Jen & Co!

  • Ivy Chickering says:

    your skin looks fab

  • Ivy Chickering says:

  • Ivy Chickering says:

  • Tonya Hall says:

It's not disrespectful, it's JUST makeup. She's clearly creative. Good for her! Eyeshadow isn't going to stop flooding, and may just make those not affected more aware of what's going on. And that's my opinion from Jacksonville, Florida.
Thanks for your reviews, Jen. I've been loving your channel lately 🙂

  • Malky Mandel says:

Jen, you look particularly beautiful today. Thanks for another great video. They're always the highlight of my week.

  • Marinela Ortiz says:

Wow! I would say that hurricane look doesn't sound offensive to me because I live in Florida and I have gone through the Big THree in 2004, Matthew last year, and now Irma which funny thing was hours before the storm I bought makeup from Ulta all thanks to some of their brand on special. Makeup should be an artistic thing and inspiring. She was inspired and want to say, "My heart goes out to everyone effected by the storms recently through makeup!"

  • Floralisa says:

This girl was using her talent as an artist to pay tribute to the storm and its victims. I wonder if a painter would have received the same backlash had they used the storm as inspiration too?

  • Shialaubeef says:

Not offended I just think it's in bad taste and bad timing.

  • Ima Freewoman says:

I was impacted by hurricane Irma, and the hurricane eye look was just personal art. People need to get a spine.

  • Alaine Brehmer says:

Hello Ladies! I'm hoping you, Jen, or someone else, can tell what you think of the Klarity brand!! Im intrigued, with palettes especially! ☺️ Thank you!!

  • Elaina Hagler says:

Wow that Victoria Beckham/EL set is ridiculously priced!!! I would never pay that much for an eyeshadow quad. Idt el brand eyeshadow is very good anyways🙄🙄

  • skylilly1 says:

I caved and ordered the Hourglass metallic highlight strobe trio. I picked up the wnw halloween lip color in the red shade. I was hoping wnw would come out with a lot more lipsitck shades. I like their longwear lipsicks, maybe for holiday we'll see some.

  • Josie Reneitte says:

    Love this!

  • BadKittyBeauty says:

I need more of that Wt N Wild collection!

  • ATL Guera says:

I think the hurricane eye look what's really beautiful and there was nothing wrong with it I seen No Malice in it……only in those who tend to put negative into everything positive and make a mountain out of a molehill.

  • ATL Guera says:

I got me some of those Sigma brushes!

  • Future SLP says:

Ok, your makeup seriously looks flawless here. Can you do a tutorial on this look???

always find something I didn't know and loved it

  • Rose Ella-Grace says:

Oh, good lord – who wants to take bets on what's offensive this coming week?! Like, Tom Ford.. why are the boys and girls separated with different colours!? Gender equality!! The sad thing is, I can see some people making a fuss over that, LOL it's becoming a joke! When something serious happens, people will absolutely lose their minds!!

    Mainly, congratulations on 90k, Jen!

  • Samceratops says:

    Who has 100 close friends????

  • Beth Gramkow says:

I am going to add the storybook brushes one of the sets at least to my Christmas list. Every year my kids do not know what to get me for Christmas so I want to be spoiled just a little bit and this year I think those brushes would be a nice way to be spoiled. They usually come by my birthday and my Christmas together since I was born December 14th. Last year they got me the Artis brush and I really love it.

  • serina Smash says:

People are saying the the hurricane eye look is offensive , but do you know what's really offensive, those Este lauder prices .

  • Katie Elizabeth Nelson says:

Sorry, I feel like this was just for the likes. She could have made this a donation challenge if she really felt sorry for the victims. My entire family lost homes in a hurricane and could NEVER go back home. Do you know what it feels like to suddenly realize you are homeless? Some of my old neighbors drown inside their homes. Some were stuck on rooftops for two weeks. In this latest storm children were literally swept away from people's arms….your makeup didn't do shit to help them.

  • Donna Nixon says:

    Thanks again

  • Amanda Plilar says:

The cvs vending machine seems more useable then the makeup vending machines

  • Amanda Plilar says:

I don't know why you don't get more views because you are awesome and love what's up in makeup!

  • Erika Vanessa Espinosa F says:

    That top!! <3!

  • anneemull says:

I am a survivor of hurricane Harvey. Right now, my home is gutted and the majority of belongings are piled up in my front yard waiting to be be picked up with the rest of the trash. So…

I honestly find it ridiculous that people are upset about the "hurricane look" post. Makeup is art. People make art about all kinds of difficult things in life. For many, art is a way to help process the hard stuff. Art is a way to process tragedy. Take the ugly and try to find something beautiful in all the mess.

It really feels like people are trying to go out of their way to find something to be offended about.

  • Kaley says:

I'm betting the people upset by the hurricane eye look haven't even been through a hurricane. I just went through Irma here in Florida and I thought her message was sweet and supportive. Not to mention that her eye look is so realistic!! It's amazing!! It's looks just like the radar reports and it's even going in a circular motion. That eye look is amazing.

  • Shirley says:

It seems like no matter what someone's intensions are there's someone getting offended. Darned if ya do darned if ya don't!!

  • Monique Sawyer says:

    Cool, thank you

  • MissNila051486 says:

Makeup is a form of art. Artwork has been inspired by happy events and devestation. So is everyone going to go to musuesms and create a stink? I think not.

  • Monica Villada says:

Dear god…the price of hourglass and Victoria Beckham make up is ludicrous!!!

  • Amber Sahul says:

    Issa is beautiful!!

  • Jessica ayres says:

Is it cleonas workshop?? How do you spell it? Those shadows look bomb!!

  • Alice May says:

I did not think the hurricane eye look was that offensive though I do see how people could take it that way due to recent events. That said, the stupidity of it and just looking at her eye lids gave me a good laughXD

The VB is overpriced. Thanks for the video. I love your channel 💕💄

  • PlasmaBurns says:

You do realize Issa Rae is rooting against your channels success because of your skin color right? …Issa Rae Issa Rae(cist)

  • Samantha March says:

Love seeing the news from you! 🙂

  • Gee L says:

I don't feel she was intentionally hurting hurricane victims. I for one, when something is talked about alot, watching news breaks, hoping for the best, but just waiting and concerned for many. Waiting and watching, alot of us plays with our make up. It finally inspired a look for her, I can see that. Is poetry or a song offensive to the people batteling the hurricane?, probaly not..they were inspired to put thoughts to words… Its seems her thoughts inspired an Eye of the Storm beauty look.
Are designers being offensive with camo /military looks..No.
No more then Wizard of Oz is offensive to Tornado victims.

  • officialdeborah says:

It was wrong timing she posted it just as FL was getting hit. I know her and she's not a nice person. It was only to gain likes bc she tagged all the popular makeup companies to gain likes. If she wanted to do this look then post it after a month and say in honor of all who was killed or harmed… But this wasn't done to be supportive and ppl seen through her fakeness and called her out for it.

  • GeekChicTee says:

I love how this legit feels like watching news on the tv.

Also that makeup look is absolutely lovely.
